BISTRITA Monastery - Alexandru cel Bun (Viisoara) commune, Neamt county

BISTRITA  Monastery

Alexandru cel Bun (Viisoara) commune, Neamt county.
Convent for monks.
Dedication days: “Assumption of the Virgin”, 15 August and “The Curing Spring”, the first Friday after Easter.

The monastery was founded by some priests, all of them members of the renowned Musatin family of Moldavian Voivodes: Alexandru the Good Voivode, Stephen the Great Voivode, Petru Rares Voivode, and Alexandru Lapusneanu Voivode.
In 1407 the church was finished. In 1554 it was reconstructed.
At the beginning of the 18th century, it was placed under the direction of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem and it remained so until the reign of Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza.

As compared with its former appearance, the architectural plan of the church has not undergone any alterations: the church comprises a porch, a pronaos, a burial chamber, a naos and the altar. In the burial chamber was interred first Alexandru the Good Voivode and his wife, Ana, then the wife of Stefan Lacusta Voivode (Stephen the Great's son), and two other children of Stephen the Great Voivode - Alexandru and Ana.
The oil paintings inside the church date from 1814. Inside the porch there are some segments of the original paintings. Between 1967 and 1984 there were initiated extensive consolidation and renovation activities.
A museum of art that exhibits icon and liturgical objects has been accommodated in one of the old outbuildings of the monastery, which also housed a school in the time of Petru Rares Voivode.

There is here the famous miracle-making icon of Saint Ann, which was donated by Manuel and Irina Paleologu to Alexandru the Good Voivode and to his wife, Ana, on 26th, June 1401.
In this monastery the Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, Teoctist Arapasu, was ordained as a monk.
Between 1969 and 1983, through the persevering efforts of Metropolitans Iustin Moisescu and Teoctist Arapasu, as well as of Father Ciprian Zaharia, the abbot of the monastery, the other round of repairs and restoration took place.
