CETATUIA Monastery - Iasi county

CETATUIA  Monastery

Iasi, 1 Cetatuia Street, Iasi county. Convent for monks.
Dedication day: “The Holy Apostles Peter and Pavel”, 29 June.

The monastic establishment was founded by Gheorghe Duca Voivode. The construction of the monastery, which commenced in 1668 and was completed in 1672, was achieved by a team of master-builders headed by the architect, sculptor and painter Grigorie Cornescu.
The architectural plan of the church of the monastery is trilobal; its defining feature is the apsidal plan, consisting of three apses that are placed across from the church entrance, one of them above the altar, and the other two above the lateral sides of the nave. The paintings inside the church, which had been executed in fresco, underwent some modifications in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Notable outbuildings have been accommodated within the monastery. Also has been constructed Voivode Gheorghe Duca’s house, a single-storied building provided with two cellars that are placed above each other. The upstairs incorporates the Abbot’s house, the Gothic Hall, and another structure that served as a princely bathroom.
The walls of the monastery were constructed in 1670. They were reinforced with battlements and with small defense towers and are almost seven meters high.
Extensive repairs and restoration works were carried out between 1827 and 1837; at that time the paintings inside the church were reconditioned, two. During the restoration works, several religious objects that dated from the founding period of the holy establishment simply disappeared. According to the chronicler Nicolae Costin, Gheorghe Duca Voivode had endowed the monastery “with many jewels and expensive liturgical objects” – out of which only a red-velvet stole was left behind. The stole had been woven of golden and silver threads by Anastasia Doamna, who was the Voivode’s wife.
In the church of the monastery we can find the tombs of Gheorghe Duca Voivode and of his daughter, Princess Maria.
The Cetatuia Monastery had a significant cultural role, too; a Greek printing press was accommodated within the monastery in 1682.
In the second half of the 19th century, the holy establishment was abandoned and reached a state of total dereliction. In 1910 complete restoration activities were carried out.
Between 1964 and 1971, the monastery underwent another round of restoration works: the belfry tower recovered its original shape, the princely bathroom, the bulwark, and the walls of the monastery underwent repairs, whereas the palace of Gheorghe Duca Voivode was thoroughly consolidated.
After 1990, a chapel has been raised inside the Gothic Hall and restoration works have been carried out on the Abbot’s house and the monastic cells, though the persevering efforts of Father Mitrofan Baltuta, the former abbot of the holy establishment.
Together with all its additional outbuildings, the monastic complex of Cetatuia is one of the most refined and accomplished pieces of architecture in the Moldavia of the 17th century.
